New album in early 2000 (July 5-98)
The Heavies are indeed in the studio, working on a whole new album, probably due for release after Christmas, preceded by a "greatest hits" selection with some new material as an appetizer. The buzz is, the new album will be less polished than "Shelter" and a return to a more vibey sound, like "Brother Sister."

Andrew and Jan were innocent (July 5-98)
Jan and Andrew were totally acquited on the charge of violent conduct last autumn in Copenhagen. They were basically set upon by a Danish nutter in a bar, who started lashing out for no reason, and then they were detained because of a law in Denmark, that is supposed to prevent "offenders" leaving the country. The police and doormen at the club had confused them with Manchester United hooligans (they had been to the match) and had absolutely nocase against them, due to alarmingly conflicting statements from "witnesses". Actually, there weren't any witnesses. According to Jan, the attacker was dead drunk, and his injuries inflicted by a fall back onto a table with glasses on.

Andrew and Jan arrested (November 4-98)
Andrew Levy and Jan Kincaid were arrested in Copenhagen last Saturday when they celebrated that their favourite team Manchester United had beaten the Danish team Bff Indby. The both attacked a Danish man. The are now taken into custody waiting for trial. Reported by Aftonbladet in Sweden

New album! (august 17-98)

Siedah has left the band (august 17-98)
Siedah Garret has left the Brand New Heavies. Rumours say that she only want´s to write songs, not perform them.

The Brit Awards (January 22-97)
The Brand New Heavies have been nominated in the category of Best British Dance Act for the upcoming Brit awards. The site address is http://www.brits.co.uk. They will be up against such groups as Jamiroquai, Prodigy and a few others.

The Brand New Heavies are doing are doing the Battersea Midland Show in London on december 16. The heavies have invited N´dea Davenport for a special reunion show and she has agreed to do it. Look forward to the best show ever by the BNH.

You´ve Got A Friend at no. 11 (October 22-97)
The third single from the Shelter-album "You´ve Got A friend is now at number 11 on the UK Chart.

The new single from Shelter (September 14-97)
The third single from their current album is a cover of
Carole King's evergreen You've Got A Friend. The right poignancy of
the original is replaced with an initially jarring but ultimately
appealing dance treatment, tastefully mixed by Todd Terry, which turns
the song into a joyous celebration.

Review of the Toronto show (September 13-97)
The date in Toronto on August 16th was at a club called the Guvernment. This place was previously called the RPM club. It is attached to another slightly larger venue called the Warehouse where the members of INXS played a coulple of nights later. Slightly larger was the operative word. I had never been to this particular club before because I came to Toronto from London (Ontario) to see the show. I had expected that the place would be much bigger. This was the first pleasant surprise of the night.
I have been a fan of the Heavies for some time and because I have such a hard time getting Heavies music or any information about them I figured that I would never get to see them live. I found out about this show by accident and I bought a ticket the next day. I had only managed to procure the latest CD SHELTER about a month before the show and I had no idea about the arrival of Siedah on the scene until then. Like everyone, I had doubts about how she would compare and these doubts had changed only a little after a preliminary listen to the new CD. I really liked N'Dea but at the same time I had always thought that she was a little too poppy.
Siedah was a more emotional and risky singer, but she seemed to lack that relentless steadiness I had come to respect in N'Dea. These opinions were to be changed before the night had run its course.
The band played a good mix of new and old (much like playlist from the show in London U.K.). This time however it was Jan who forgot the lyrics in BACK TO LOVE from BROTHER SISTER and Siedah who picked up the slack. Typically in funky bands there is a tendancy for the guitar to be more of a low key instrument. I had a good deal of respect for Simon before the show, but after he played two extended solos in the set I was ready to compare him to almost any of the greatest guitarists. This was the second nice surprise. Andrew played the bass at the beginning of ONCE IS TWICE ENOUGH a little too fast and the rest of the band made him pay by playing the whole song at the faster speed. This added a little humor to the night.
Jan was clever on the skins, showing-off in only the right places. The rest of the back-up band were also very good. The third nice surprise came in the performance of Siedah. She showed that she was just as capable as N'Dea at holding steady notes, but then took her own singing style to new levels. Her vioce was almost prefect and only cracked is the right places. Even this seemed to be controled. In short she was incredible!!
Somewhere in the middle of the show, Siedah introduced PUT THE FUNK BACK IN IT by saying that she hadn't heard nearly enough Funk on the radio here in Canada. I must agree with that. Indeed my own desire for Funk is seldom quenched, but for one night it was. The show lasted a little less than two hours including an encore and before I knew it, I was in the car on the way home. I can't wait for the next opportunity to get down with the Heavies. I hope they visit again soon.

Review of London gig (April 12 -97)
On Monday 7th April, off we set into central london to see the Brand New Heavies. As this was their first live performance for over 2 years, we were kind of excited and really pleased that we had the tickets. The gig was at the Hanover Grand and having never been there before, we did not know what to expect. That was the first shock...the place was so small!! Only about 300 people there and we were at the front!

The band came on stage at around 10pm, to a rousing reception. Andrew was wearing a funky pale green flares suit with a white lace shirt and Simon was sporting a rather bright red flares suit with a particularly nasty Hawaiian shirt...you know, the usual! Siedah came on then, wearing not a lot which went down well with all the guys...boy, is she thin!

- The playlist was as follows:
- I Like It
- Dream On Dreamer
- Brother Sister
- Brand New Heavies (inst)
- Last To Know
- Stay This Way
- Stay Gone
- Once Is Twice Enough (inst)
- You Are The Universe
- Midnight At The Oasis
- Sometimes
- Never Stop
- Dream Come True

It was nice to see a good mix of old and new stuff. I had to say that I went to the concert not really knowing what to think of Siedah, as I think that N'Dea was really great with the band. But having seen the Heavies with both singers, it has to be said that Siedah comes across really well live. She has a seriously powerful voice and has great stage charisma. The only problem she had was when she forgot the words a couple of times and Simon had to help her out, but at least it makes her human!

There was a technical problem after Sometimes, when the guys had kind of blown some of the power circuits so Siedah got the whole crowd singing the song with Jan playing the drums. The band seemed really pleased that all the crowd knew the words and, for me, it was one of the highlights of the evening as there was a great atmosphere created.
All too soon it was over, but at least they finished off with two of my favourite songs. All in all, an excellent evening and personally I can't wait for the album to be released later this month. Bring forth Shelter...

(Thank you Sharon Fox and David Rowe who sent us this review)
